We are currently seeking a part – time Custodian to join our team at our Log Yard located in Michigamme, MI.  If you are looking for position with flexible hours, we would love to hear from you!

Job Summary

The Custodian maintains the interior and exterior of Company facilities and offices in a clean, neat, orderly and secure manner.  Other duties include:

  • Keep facilities and property in clean and orderly condition
  • Clean facilities including, offices, restrooms, storage areas, entryways
  • Empty trash cans and place garbage & recycling in outside bins
  • Inventory and order facility supplies and stock areas as needed; pick up orders as needed
  • Mow lawns, trim shrubs, trees
  • Snow & ice removal in parking area, sidewalks, entry ways, spread salt
  • Perform routine maintenance activities including minor repairs to electrical, heating and plumbing systems and system maintenance; Work with contractors and refer to contractors as needed
  • Observe and report security, safety, and other problems; secure facility
  • Adheres to all MIOSHA, federal and company safety requirements

Work Schedule:  

Part-time: 10 hours per week; flexible hours needed for emergency facility issues

Recommended Education/Experience

High school diploma or equivalent; 2+ years custodial experience; minor electrical, plumbing, light construction experience helpful, prior purchasing experience helpful.

Job Summary

We are hiring two experienced logging equipment operators.  One position will be based out of Marquette County, Michigan (including but not limited to) and the other position is located in the Houghton-Keweenaw-Baraga Counties of Michigan, (including but not limited to). A CDL and ability to operate a logging truck is a plus.

The Forwarder Operator skids, loads, unloads and stacks logs understanding forest products and working with the forestry team including the Harvester Operator, Production and Logistics Manager, Truck Drivers, Foresters and Log Yard staff.  Other duties include:

  • Safely and efficiently operate a Ponsse forwarder or equivalent
  • Knowledge and understanding of timber species and forest products and moving products in a safe manner and to appropriate area
  • Properly deck and sort logs, bolts, pulpwood roadside according to species
  • Safely and skillfully maneuver forwarder on moderate to steep forest terrain/slopes
  • Control machine operation using a combination of joysticks, buttons, pedals and levers
  • Communicate machine location and tree movement activities using a CB or 2-way radio or phone
  • Equip forwarder with crawler treads or tire chains
  • Occasional use of a chainsaw may be required
  • Conduct operations in accordance with company, state, and federal environmental standards and laws
  • Detect and eliminate or minimize safety hazards
  • Maintain contact with pedestrians, foresters, harvester and log trucks hauling in the area for a safe and effective passage
  • Perform pre- and post-routine equipment inspections and report safety issues and/or needed repairs to supervisor
  • Perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs to equipment and keep the equipment clean inside and out
  • Maintain spill kit on site; clean up and report any spills according to procedures
  • Maintain maintenance logs on equipment
  • Utilization of computers, printers, GPS, smart phones and mapping software
  • Ordering of parts and understanding of the owner’s manuals
  • Utilization of all PPE gear provided by the company
  • Understanding and utilization of the lookout-tagout safety system
  • Participate in all safety meetings and follow safety procedures

Hours:   Full-time 40+ hours per week; irregular hours with early start time & late end time; daily travel to remote sites

Education/Experience

  • High school graduate or GED
  • 3+ years’ experience operating logging equipment such as harvester or forwarder
  • understanding of timber species and products
  • knowledge of principles/practices of environmental regulation
  • mechanical and safety aptitude and ability to perform regular maintenance
  • excellent driving record necessary
  • CDL and ability to operate logging truck a plus

FUNCTION/DUTIES

  • Developing HR strategies in areas of: policies and procedures, staff evaluations and succession planning, recruitment trends and organizational goals and alignment for all levels of the business
    • Performs tasks required to administer and execute human resource programs including talent acquisition, performance and talent management, training and development, safety, and employee relations
    • Assess employee training and development needs and assist managers with developmental plans for employees; organize training; write and manage grant process; track and document training and continuing education
  • Handles employment-related inquiries from applicants, employees, and supervisors, driving consistency across all organizations

  • Cleans work area and keeps free of hazards

  • Personal protective equipment, hearing protection, hard hat, safety shoes, safety glasses, side shields must be worn in designated areas.
  • Shut off feed rolls when not in use
  • Never use hands to remove slivers or clear jambs in the machine
  • Always use the Lockout/Tagout procedure
  • Be alert to the presence of lift trucks
  • Stack lumber to insure that piles are stable
  • Use only approved walkways to cross over or under belts or conveyors while they are in operation
  • Do not wear loose or torn clothing near moving conveyors
  • Materials that may roll, slide or shift must be securely blocked or guarded.

Northern Hardwoods Lumber is hiring a Lumber Inspector to effectively inspect all four sides of lumber to determine lumber grade, length and species in accordance with all applicable quality, safety, and industry standards.

 Essential Functions/Duties:

      1. Quality

  • Grade lumber for color, width, length and thickness per NHLA standards
  • Mark lumber for cut-off or ripping to maximize grade value
  • Make decisions to rip boards or send back to edger
  • Monitor quality of lumber for thickness variations, miscuts, saw tooth marks, and other machine induced defects
  • Meet or exceed production goals 
  • Supervise staff when department supervisor not present
  • Proactively communicate and work with others on the line to ensure quality, efficiency and safety

       2. Safety      

  • Encourage and model a safe environment; identify safety process improvements.
  • Report all injuries, accidents, near misses, unsafe conditions, or practices to your supervisor or lead person immediately.

       3. Perform other duties as necessary and/or assigned.
