Job Summary

The Forwarder Operator uses mechanized forwarding equipment in the forest to skid, load, unload or stack logs. This position interacts primarily with the Harvester Operator, Production and Logistics Manager, Truck Drivers, Foresters and Log Yard staff. This position is located in Marquette County Michigan.

The Forwarder Operator skids, loads, unloads and stack logs understanding forest products and timber species working with the Harvester Operator, Production and Logistics Manager, Truck Drivers, Foresters and Log Yard staff.  Other duties include:

  • Safely and efficiently operate a Ponsse forwarder or equivalent
  • Understand forest products and move products in a safe manner and to appropriate area
  • Properly deck and sort logs, bolts, pulpwood roadside according to species
  • Safely and skillfully maneuver forwarder on moderate to steep forest terrain/slopes
  • Control machine operation using a combination of joysticks, buttons, pedals and levers
  • Communicate machine location and tree movement activities using a CB or 2-way radio or phone
  • Equip forwarder with crawler treads or tire chains
  • Occasional use of a chainsaw may be required
  • Conduct operations in accordance with company, state, and federal environmental standards and laws
  • Detect and eliminate or minimize safety hazards
  • Maintain contact with pedestrians, foresters, harvester and log trucks hauling in the area for a safe and effective passage
  • Perform pre- and post-routine equipment inspections and report safety issues and/or needed repairs to supervisor
  • Perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs to equipment and keep the equipment clean inside and out
  • Maintain spill kit on site; clean up and report any spills according to procedures
  • Maintain maintenance logs on equipment
  • Utilization of computers, printers, GPS, smart phones and mapping software
  • Ordering of parts and understanding of the owner’s manuals
  • Utilization of all PPE gear provided by the company
  • Understanding and utilization of the lookout-tagout safety system
  • Participate in all safety meetings and follow safety procedures

Hours:   Full-time 40+ hours per week; irregular hours with early start time & late end time; daily travel to remote sites

Education/Experience

  • High school graduate or GED
  • 3+ years’ experience operating logging equipment such as harvester or forwarder
  • understanding of timber species and products
  • knowledge of principles/practices of environmental regulation

  • Transports products in a safe and efficient manner from production sites to customers or green yard during day, evening or overnight hours
  • Deliver goods on local and inter-state routes utilizing a semi-truck and trailer with a gross weight of 80,000lbs
  • Maneuver truck into loading/unloading position and load / unload cargo
  • Secure loads in a legal manner with chains or straps according to state laws
  • Check load in route to ensure lumber has not shifted; adjust load and secure again
  • Release binders according to instructions given by unloading location
  • Open / Close rolling cover on trailer
  • Record amount and type of cargo being delivered, mileage, fuel expense and other costs incurred

  • Comply with environmental standards and clean up spills with spill kit and report according to procedures

  • Maintains pricing levels as communicated by Sales Manager, premium pricing is key to success.
  • Develops new markets and broadens the customer base
  • Light procurement of green and kiln dried lumber as assigned by Sales Manager
  • Collaborates with production supervisors to develop strong customer relations and satisfy customer quality and service concerns.

Northern Hardwoods Lumber in Atlantic Mine, Michigan is hiring a Production Supervisor for PM shift. The PM shift Assistant Supervisor is responsible for assisting the supervisor in managing operations to ensure safe working conditions, meet production goals, and control costs.

The Assistant Supervisor will also serve as a backup lumber inspector, effectively inspecting all four sides of lumber to determine lumber grade, length, and species in accordance with all applicable quality, safety, and industry standards. This is a  Full-time – 40 hours per week position.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / DUTIES

Production

  • Assist and trouble shoot maintenance issues; identify preventive maintenance needs
  • Perform initial and ongoing staff training
  • Operate grading / tally system computers
  • Grade lumber for color, width, length and thickness per NHLA standards
  • Meet or exceed production goals
  • Supervise staff when department supervisor not present
  • Proactively communicate and work with others on the line to ensure quality, efficiency and safety

Quality Control

  • Meet quality standards set by NHLA
  • Maintain consistent standards for lumber inspections
  • Monitor quality of lumber for thickness variations, miscuts, saw tooth marks, and other machine induced defects

Safety

  • Encourage and model a safe environment; identify safety process improvements.
  • Report all injuries, accidents, near misses, unsafe conditions, or practices to the supervisor immediately.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
