Species

Because of the location of Longyear's forests and operations in the Great Lakes Region of the United States, Longyear is able to offer its customers northern hardwoods of exceptional grain and quality and a variety of species suitable for a vast array of uses. The species offered by Longyear and some of their uses include:

  • Basswood (Tilia Americana): A softer wood with very little grain, basswood is used in furniture, venetian blinds, picture frames and toys.

  • Black Cherry (Prunus serotina): Known for its strong, attractive red color, black cherry wood is prized for furniture, cabinetry, musical instruments and toys.

  • Hard Maple (Sugar Maple; Acer saccharum): Very strong, hard maple is used to make furniture, wood baskets, plywood, flooring, veneer, sporting goods and cutting boards.

    • Birds Eye Maple (Hard Maple; Acer saccharum): This hard maple features a curled grain, or birds eye, and is used in cabinets, furniture and veneer.

    • Curly Maple (Hard Maple-Acer saccharum; Soft Maple-Acer rubrum): This hard and soft maple is used especially in crafting musical instruments.

  • Soft Maple (Red Maple; Acer rubrum): More bendable than hard maple, soft maple is used for plywood, cabinets and furniture.

    • Curly Maple (Hard Maple-Acer saccharum; Soft Maple-Acer rubrum): This hard and soft maple is used especially in crafting musical instruments.

  • White Ash (Fraxinus Americana): White, strong and straight-grained, white ash is used in furniture, veneer and sporting goods, including baseball bats.

  • White Birch (Betula papyrifera marsh): Named for the color of its bark, white birch is used in veneer, furniture and flooring.

  • Red Oak (Quercus rubra): Red oak is used to make furniture, paneling and trim, veneer staves, cabinets and flooring.

  • Yellow Birch (Betula lutea): Named for the color of its bark, yellow birch is used in veneer, furniture and flooring.
