At its log yard operations, Longyear sorts wood by species and ultimate log use. Some of the log products offered at Longyear yards include high quality slicer and rotary veneer logs, saw logs, bolts and pulpwood logs.
High quality slicer veneer logs: High-quality logs generally from the lower portion of a tree, these thinly sliced logs produce veneer, which is used by architectural millwork companies.
Rotary veneer logs: These high-quality logs, also generally from the lower portion of a tree, are rotated on a lathe to peel off veneer, which is used in panels, engineered flooring, the window and door industry, furniture and cabinets.
Saw logs: These logs generally come from the mid to upper portion of a tree and are sold to sawmills and cut into grade lumber to produce furniture, cabinets, moulding, flooring, pallets and railroad ties.
Saw bolts: These smaller diameter logs are sold as saw bolts and mainly sawed into pallet parts.
Pulpwood: These hardwood and softwood logs do not meet the quality or size to qualify for the above-described products. They are used to make pulp for our customers' manufacturing, coated papers (magazines), uncoated freesheet, uncoated mechanical and other paper products (tissue).
