Responsible environmental management of forest resources is our commitment and part of our business practices. Longyear's forest management and harvest activities are guided by a Forest Management Plan and Environmental Policy and implemented by professional foresters and independent loggers.
Longyear manages its forest resources to enhance future productivity and practices sustainable timber harvesting with the conservation of soil and water quality, wildlife habitat, aesthetics, and special sites of ecological, historical and geologic significance. We are committed to pollution prevention in our operational practices and comply with applicable forest management laws and regulations.
Longyear forestland management and harvest operations, including road construction and maintenance are conducted within standards and guidelines of the Forest Stewardship Council Standard (FSC) and have been certified by the FSC, Certificate Registration No. SW-FM/COC-003804.
To achieve our environmental standards, Longyear utilizes contractors trained and certified by the Sustainable Forest Education (SFE) program. Longyear foresters also receive SFE training. The SFE program provides training in skills and standards for implementation of sustainable forest management practices, including compliance with safety standards and application of the State of Michigan's Best Management Practices.
